I agree with you observation that there is a growing trend of not taking responsibility. I remember Rumsfeld’s press conference about WMDs in Iraq. He said something to the like, “There are things we know, things we don’t know, and things we don’t know that we don’t know.” Apparently that was his justification for the invasion. As contemporary philosopher, Slavoj Zizek, points out it’s the “things we don’t know that we know” that we have to watch out for. That’s the subconscious mind working. The conflicts we keep buried. Bush and Rumsfeld were not aware of their own motivations. For personal reasons they wanted to invade Iraq. In the language of traditional storytelling : The “old soldier” (Rumsfeld) wanted to command an army and the “young king” (George W. Bush) wanted to get vanquish the “villain” (Hussein) who had escaped his father, the “old king” (George H. W. Bush.)

I voted for Obama but he is starting to really disappoint me and slowly changing my opinion of him from a positive one to a negitive one.

You've done it (yet) again, Paul. The right metaphor, the powerful and clear and inspiring message.I'm imagining a t-shirt: Disenthrall ya-all (with your web address)!

Great comment Tory, I think we should be expanding the exploration and discovery metaphor to create a more adaptable style of learning to our modern times, and the Sailing Channel with all its great material can feed that imagination.

Sherry Turkle has just written a new book, Alone Together:Why we expect more from technology and less from each other. I've ordered it and look forward to what she has to tell us about the new world. She has been so very insightful in the past. Perhaps, she will begin the story you are talking about.

The exploration theme is a wonderful metaphor for voyaging our new digital world. The earth's oceans connect us all. They are how we all travelled to where we are sometime in our family tree aboard vessels both stout and leaky. Now we voyage upon a digital ocean where the currents are changing and unpredictable. From a cell phone screen held high in a conflict-ridden city of the Middle East to another capturing the angst of union workers under siege in an America city, our new vessels carry us instantly from one human island to another, all joined together in a great digital soup. What matters in all of this, are the stories.... The Stories are what allow us to build a new common, global experience.Social activists, educators, company CEOs, public bureaucrats, elected officials, hated strongmen: ignore the new stories flowing across this new digital ocean at your own peril.
